Forshaw Family

Postby Lady Forshaw » Wed Feb 10, 2010 5:44 pm

Sunny Greetings from the North kinsfolk!

I am a great great great great grandaughter of Henry Forshaw of Newton who worked alongside the famous racehorse trainer George Dawson at Bogside, Ayr in service to Lord Montgomery of Eglinton. Henry also stabled horses for the Earl of Hopetoun during the visit of George IV.

I believe his family kept in touch with friends/family in Newton, especially the Appletons who managed the Swan on Newton Common.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone with links to these families and info re. the pub around the 1800's.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lady Forshaw,

You might want to check the following topic out as it seems to have connections to your own research interests;

"Looking for family history - Naylor & Rhodes"
http://www.newton-le-willows.com/history/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1442

I did some pre 1841 pub research myself and found Lancashire record office in Preston very useful/helpful. Old, original documents relating to pubs within the West Derby Hundred are housed at Lancs Record Office. I looked at these old documents to work out where and when an ancestor of mine was an inn keeper (he had died before 1841 so I couldn't use the census as a source).

If I remember correctly the names of the documents I looked at were "Recognizances" or “Ale House Recognizances”. If you contact Lancs record office and explain what you're researching and the term Recognizances, I'm sure they'll know how to help. If you can't get to the record office yourself you can pay to have research done on your behalf.

Contact details for Lancashire Record Office;

Best of luck with your search. Regards, Kirsty (a Forshaw descendant) :)

Kirsty ---youre a star!Thank you for that and so nice to hear from another Forshaw descendant--Im hoping to connect my Henry (b.1779) with some of the Haydock Forshaws but all I know for sure is that his granddaughter Ellen Appleton was staying in Edinburgh in 1841(holidays?) while his daughter Elizabeth Forshaw was staying/working at the Swan in 1841 for James Appleton (Son ??? of Henry F as he was born illeg. and right for dates)
Another grandchild, Mary Forshaw was born at Newton around 1840 altho the family were based in Scotland so returned there.
Im fairly sure there was a family connection to John Forshaw(m to Hannah Fairhurst) who married at Winwick and lived at Haydock , but at the moment its still a hunch. If you know anything about that Elizabeth born in Scotland or any other Elizabeth I might be confusing her with Id really appreciate your experienced guidance!
Many thanks again cuzz!

Hi Lady Forshaw,

You're very welcome :D . Happy to help.

I've just had a look on The National Archives, Access to Archives web-site in the hope of spotting any possible "Orders of Filiation and Maintenance" that could link your James Appleton to Henry Forshaw but couldn't see anything I'm afraid. Not being able to find a filiation/maintenance order doesn't rule out a father/son relationship between the two men though. Maybe an order simply wasn't needed if Henry was prepared to offer financial assistance of if James' mother didn't need it because she either married or was supported by her family.

Most, if not all of my Forshaw's seem to have Haydock origins (I currently have 140 individual Forshaw's in my tree). My paternal nana's maiden name is Forshaw and her father (and his father and so on..) was Haydock born and bred. The furthest I've got back is a William Forshaw who was born c. 1786 (going off his age at death) who married a Cicely Longbottom. William's three children were born in Haydock and William lived, worked and died in Haydock but I don't know where he was born. William died in a mining accident in July 1813 and I don't have any sources to identify his place of birth. I've yet to find a baptism which looks a close enough match for William so I'm at something of a brick wall.

I'm afraid I don't know anything of any Scottish Forshaw's but if I stumble upon anything I'll be sure to drop you a PM.

Best of Wishes, Kirsty :)

Re: Forshaw Family

Since taking another look at the 1851 census I've realised that the Elizabeth Forshaw who gave birth to Joseph Forshaw around 1843 and moved to Hall Meadow was NOT in fact the same Elizabeth working in The Swan in 1841!!! She was clearly born in LANCS.

However, she was the same age as my Elizabeth (possibly daughter of Peter Forshaw ?) and if it's any help to anyone out there I think she then married/lived with a Ralph Unsworth and certainly had a baby, Sara Unsworth, to her partner in 1849 as they are found all living together on the 1851 census in Newton. She's in Liverpool by 1881 going by names and dates.

As for my Elizabeth --- who knows where she went --- but thanks again for the tips Kirsty. I've now made contact with Lancashire record office and am waiting for a copy of Henry Forshaw's will to see if it yields any info as well as the Recognizances you mentioned.

Cheerie for now! :D
